Lesson 3 - Choose the Right Customer

You can have a great product, but if you don't have anyone to sell it to, then you're wasting your time.

This is where you'll want to do more research.

Here are a some sites that you can go to to get demographic information. Demographic information gives information like age and sex of buyers, income levels, buying habits and more. You'll need to consider these factors when determining who your customer is.

CyberAtlas - http://www.cyberatlas.com/ - statistics and web marketing information.

InternetStats - http://www.internetstats.com/- marketing information, statistics and trends

CIA World Fact Book http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/ - offers a collection of statistics on all of the countries of the world

Once you've gathered the information you want, and you have a customer in mind, put this in your notebook. You'll need this information to help you write your USP (unique selling proposition).

The important thing to remember about finding your customer is that you want a product and customer that match. Not only will this help you in marketing your product, but you'll make more money.

Your goal is to market with laser-like precision. If you're selling Classical music CDs, you don't want to market them to teenagers. They won't buy.

Study your demographic information and formulate a picture in your mind of your customer. Not only will this help you find the correct target market, but it will help you later when you're writing your ad copy.

There are also two other ways you can find out what people want:

Forums and keyword software.

Search in your favorite search engine for your topic. You will want to combine this search with the keyword forums. (Put the search term in quotes.)

Find four or five forums on your topic and find out what people are talking about.
